Green Teacher Network

Posted by | events | No Comments

Each time we host one of our markets we like to choose a local non-profit that we can share the love with.  For the 2015 Summer Market, our non-profit partner is Green Teacher Network.  During our VIP Shop, GTN will be setting up a silent auction full of all sorts of amazing local food, drink and of course our Summer Market vendors have donated some vintage and handmade items into the mix as well!  100% of the proceeds of the silent auction go directly to GTN!  Can’t make it to our VIP Shop?  GTN will also have a info station set up on market day where you can cool off with some bottled water and learn all about their mission and all the work they are doing in Charlotte.

We strongly believe in the message of sustainability in all things and GTN are our heroes because of the work they are doing in our Charlotte schools:

Green Teacher Network works to advance academics, health and sustainability through school gardens and outdoor learning.  GTN collaborates with over 30area organizations in support of school gardens, tastings, composting, and the natural environment. We currently maintain a network of over 1,400 educators in 185 schools in the Charlotte region.

We serve as the central resource for school gardens and outdoor learning through sharing best practices, responding to the needs of our teachers, developing programs and communicating other gardening resources through our website, newsletter, blogs and social media.

We empower educators to engage students in gardening, tastings and outdoor learning! Increased awareness of food and relevant outdoor hands-on learning will lead to improved health and academic performance. Our programs include:

Quarterly Professional Development Workshops: Hands-on skill development for teachers and informal educators supporting school gardens, tastings and much more.

Growing Entrepreneurs: Through our partnership with the Piedmont Culinary Guildand PEEP (Pride Magazine Entrepreneurial Education Program) middle and high schools are growing crops for area farm to table restaurants to teach financial literacy and entrepreneurism.

Chicken Tractor: GTN coordinates a mobile chicken tractor that visits schools on a weekly basis in spring and fall to give students the opportunity to observe live laying hens, providing project-based learning around an important NC industry.

STEM Catawba River Festival: Since 2009, we have hosted an annual field trip for five economically challenged schools in NW Charlotte-Mecklenburg and East Gaston Counties to provide hands on learning opportunities in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) at the Duke Energy EnergyExplorium.

GTN works with over 30 organizations that collectively support school gardening and outdoor learning. The collective effectiveness of the team has shown engagement with over 185 area schools in the past 2 years.  In response to teachers surveys GTN published a Schoolyard Gardening and Tasting Guide as a step by step guide for school gardens and tastings. Also, UNC Charlotte Center for STEM Education is working on a Curriculum Connection Matrix to provide a centralized site to access school garden, tasting and outdoor learning lesson plans connected to North Carolina Essential Standards.

Fall 2015 Green Teacher Network will support 11 area schools as they transition from occasional school gardening to a curriculum integrated annual gardening strategy – GTN School Garden Certification.   Based on best practices from around the US and feedback from over 500 area teachers/informal educators, GTN Certification transitions school gardening to an intentional project-based learning initiative with a goal of engaging 10 to 15% of the teachers at each participating school to achieve school garden sustainability and increase effectiveness.

Come out and spend the day shopping with over 80 vintage & handmade vendors. Leading up to the market, we’ll be sharing vendor spotlight posts that give you a chance to meet some of our amazing vendors in advance of the market.

Our talented makers and designers have some serious treats in store for your littles.  From apparel to one of a kind toys and gifts, the range and quality of handmade children’s products you’ll find at this market is the biggest and best one yet! Here is a tiny preview of what’s in store:

Studio {1859}

If you’ve been around a teething baby, you know they grab and put everything in their mouth, trying to sooth those poor aching gums.  Studio {1859} to the rescue!  Check out their new line a line of crochet & wood teething toys and teething necklaces for mamas to wear. The teething toys combine cotton crochet with natural, chemical-free wooden rings to provide a cute, fun and safe alternative to plastic toys. The teething necklaces make a cute accessory for mom to wear to keep their little one entertained while nursing or baby-wearing. Other crochet items will be available at the market including baskets made from recycled fabric yarn, hair accessories and a small selection of scarves/hats.

The Magpie Co.

Elizabeth Conner has been sewing since she was a teen, has dabbled in other handmade small businesses, and just last year found her footing and passion in her own handmade line for kids: the Magpie Co. Featuring classic design with a modern and comfy twist for even the tiniest fashion forward babes. We pride ourselves on utilizing  ethically sourced textiles from all over the world, all handmade in gorgeous Monroe, North Carolina, a small town right outside of Charlotte.

Little Tonto

Little Tonto is inspired by Mindy’s son Isaac, who has a genetic disorder called Fanconi Anemia. A small part of the disease is that the children always are very tiny. (You can read more about Isaac’s story here.) Mindy couldn’t find shoes to fit him, so she gathered some leather scraps & scissors & started testing out all sorts of little boots & shoes. She quickly fell in love with making little moccasins & trying new fun creative designs.  Check out these gorgeous little mocs from her summer market line:

Bunch Collective

Bunch Collective is back with whimsical, one-of-a-kind crochet toys and decorative objects!  It all started with a toy crafted for Nicci’s own kids–it was so much fun she wanted to make more and more! Look at how much personality is in each one of these faces.  Sol pillows and colorful garlands will be back, together with fruits and vegetables, and other happy characters.  Each piece is crafted lovingly by hand. Check out some of the inventive details in these creatures:

Dunlap Love

Kaylyn was inspired to start Dunlap Love by the nightly made up stories and adventures of her 3 kiddos and their big imaginations. She creates unique handmade plush using high quality fabrics and recycled materials, and thought out detail (such as butt cracks, yup). As an adoptive family, Dunlap Love supports families bringing children home, with 20% of profits each month.

Zoe Girl Designs

Zoe Girl Designs is a handmade apparel line based in Concord, NC. After the birth of her third child, Donna decided to leave the legal field.  A year later, she started sewing, and Zoe Girl Designs followed soon after.  The summer market line will feature colorful sundresses, bubble shorts, and bodysuits.

Maliasmark VTGCLTAt Maliasmark, we live by our tagline, Rust and Ruin, Reborn. We are driven by the knowledge that there are so many things that do not belong in a landfill. Whether they can still actually be used for their intended purpose, used in new and interesting ways, or just set on a shelf to bring a smile to our faces, we save these pieces from the past so they can be given a new future.
