Summer Market Vendor Spotlight: Original Brooks

Posted by | vendor spotlight | No Comments

VTGCLT is popping up on June 18th at 514 N. College Street for the fifth annual Summer Market! Come out and spend the day shopping with over 60 of the region’s best vintage & handmade vendors. Admission to the market is FREE from 11am-6pm! Get in an hour early at 10am for $5 to get first pick of all the goods.

Leading up to the market, we’ll be sharing vendor spotlight posts that give you a chance to meet some of our amazing vendors in advance of the market. We are really excited to welcome Sara of Original Brooks to her first Vintage Charlotte Market.  We just love these beautiful hand-sewn notebooks and can’t wait to see them in person at the Summer Market, here is Sara with a little about her process:
original brooksPrimarily self-taught as a bookbinder, I learned the fine craft of bookbinding while studying photography at the University of Oklahoma. But it was not until moving to Asheville in 2011 that my interest in bookmaking became serious. My bookmaking practice combines traditional bookbinding techniques and a modern approach to design. My handmade books incorporate vintage materials with clean designs. I am inspired by mid-century modern furniture and architecture and 1970’s floral motifs.
Process_ZodiacNotebook 2abb4f_2e1aefb0fdee40f1984f1773d3c10e01My books are hand-sewn, limited edition runs made from vintage paper and fabrics. I love the thrill of the hunt for a good bargain! Buying materials for my books is an excuse to go to thrifting. I can find interesting paper and cool vintage fabrics inexpensively. Using recycled materials not only make my books very unique (often one-of-a-kind) but also affordable for my customers. I feel good knowing that I am conserving resources and often saving materials bound for the landfill. For instance, I found a huge box of old, dated church programs that had no real use anymore. I was able to salvage part of the paper and create about 50 notebooks. I love the challenge of looking at a material and figuring out a creative re-use for it.Covers1 Brooks1

Winter Market Vendor Spotlight: Sans Map Bags

Posted by | vendor spotlight | No Comments

VTG CLT is popping up on November 15th at The Fillmore for the fourth annual Winter Market!

We are really excited to welcome back Corey from Sans Map Bags to the Vintage Charlotte Winter Market. We are in love with her sophisticated, dreamy totes and bags. Here is Corey with her story and some sneak peeks of what she’s bringing to market:

sans map bags

The name Sans Map comes from the French word Sans, meaning ‘without’, and the English word Map. It all began several years ago while I was searching for vintage furniture after my husband and I moved back from living abroad in his hometown in the south of France. I happened to stumble across a beautiful vintage Italian-made Necchi sewing machine and even though I had no idea how to sew, and really no use for it at the time, felt an undeniable need to make it mine.  Twenty dollars, a professional tune-up, lots of googling and many broken needles later, my fingers were zooming down a road that would eventually lead to me creating Sans Map Bags.

sans map bags

I am intentional in my use of repurposed vintage garments, vintage fabrics, reclaimed materials and natural fibers and organic/recycled fabrics. Focused on small batch and limited run editions, I incorporate original stitching and seams, pockets, and natural leather imperfections into my work which lends to the unique quality of my bags. All of the creating magic happens in my home studio here in Charlotte, NC. After trading busy city life in Brooklyn, NY for sunnier days in the south, I continue to draw on my surroundings as inspiration. A traveller and a dreamer, I find endless beauty in the complexity of cities and the simplicity of nature. Sans Map is my philosophy: living life as it comes, taking the uncharted path and embracing the unexpected. Living life without a map…

Little Tonto

Little Tonto is inspired by Mindy’s son Isaac, who has a genetic disorder called Fanconi Anemia. A small part of the disease is that the children always are very tiny. (You can read more about Isaac’s story here.) Mindy couldn’t find shoes to fit him, so she gathered some leather scraps & scissors & started testing out all sorts of little boots & shoes. She quickly fell in love with making little moccasins & trying new fun creative designs.  Check out these gorgeous little mocs from her summer market line:

Summer Market Vendor Spotlight: Formation Design Studio

We are really excited to welcome Amanda from Formation Design Studio to her first Vintage Charlotte market.  Amanda’s goal is to design your favorite garments.  All of us wanted to wear her effortless, relaxed garments, and we think you will too. Here is Amanda sharing her journey, and what drives her as a designer:

IMG_2661
 I graduated with a BFA in Fashion Design from Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in 2005. Soon after I was designing for Urban Outfitters. After many years with the company, I decided to move back home to North Carolina in 2010, continuing to freelance design. It was then that I branched out on my own with Formation Design Studio.

IMG_2737My design aesthetic is influenced heavily by my past design experiences with Urban Outfitters, but I have also tried to brand my line more individually… designing and making more organically. It is important to me that I deliver garments that are long lasting, with quality and edge. IMG_3232
I believe that it is important to understand where and how your garment came to life. My designs are made in small quantities with a non-seasonal approach throughout the year, so each piece is unique and wonderful. There is a dedication to quality and detail in every garment. Each piece is made by me, in my North Carolina studio.  Unlike mass production, there is something special about knowing that you have one of just a few pieces made. You and I are part of something that was developed with care, precision, and passion. I want for you to go back to your closet for this “favorite” time and time again.

WINTER MARKET VENDOR SPOTLIGHT: Studio{1859}

Posted by | events, vendor spotlight | No Comments

Our vendor spotlight posts give you a chance to meet some of our amazing vendors before the Vintage Charlotte Winter Market on November 15, 2014 at The Fillmore Charlotte.  We are really excited to welcome back STUDIO{1859}, here is Megan talking about how it all started and some sneak peaks of all the crochet lovelies she is bringing to the market:

studio{1859}

STUDIO{1859} began in 2012 after encouragement from family and friends to begin selling the crochet accessories I had been making for others as gifts. Since first learning to crochet 10 years ago I haven’t been able to put down the yarn. I believe crocheting is becoming a lost art and I enjoy keeping it alive in more ways than just hats and scarves. In college I studied Textile Engineering and my day job is working in a chemistry lab but my lunch breaks and evenings are filled with crocheting.  My shop is mainly filled with crochet goods for babies and toddlers all made in my home studio (aka 1859 – my house number). I have recently added a line of baskets, bowls and home decor crocheted with fabric yarn that is made from recycled textile manufacturing scraps. I have a passion for creating and love coming up with ways to incorporate yarn into everyday life because it shouldn’t be reserved just for winter!
