Green Teacher Network

Posted by | events | No Comments

Each time we host one of our markets we like to choose a local non-profit that we can share the love with.  For the 2015 Summer Market, our non-profit partner is Green Teacher Network.  During our VIP Shop, GTN will be setting up a silent auction full of all sorts of amazing local food, drink and of course our Summer Market vendors have donated some vintage and handmade items into the mix as well!  100% of the proceeds of the silent auction go directly to GTN!  Can’t make it to our VIP Shop?  GTN will also have a info station set up on market day where you can cool off with some bottled water and learn all about their mission and all the work they are doing in Charlotte.

We strongly believe in the message of sustainability in all things and GTN are our heroes because of the work they are doing in our Charlotte schools:

GreenTeacherNetwork

Green Teacher Network works to advance academics, health and sustainability through school gardens and outdoor learning.  GTN collaborates with over 30area organizations in support of school gardens, tastings, composting, and the natural environment. We currently maintain a network of over 1,400 educators in 185 schools in the Charlotte region.

We empower educators to engage students in gardening, tastings and outdoor learning! Increased awareness of food and relevant outdoor hands-on learning will lead to improved health and academic performance. Our programs include:

Quarterly Professional Development Workshops: Hands-on skill development for teachers and informal educators supporting school gardens, tastings and much more.

Growing Entrepreneurs: Through our partnership with the Piedmont Culinary Guildand PEEP (Pride Magazine Entrepreneurial Education Program) middle and high schools are growing crops for area farm to table restaurants to teach financial literacy and entrepreneurism.

Chicken Tractor: GTN coordinates a mobile chicken tractor that visits schools on a weekly basis in spring and fall to give students the opportunity to observe live laying hens, providing project-based learning around an important NC industry.

STEM Catawba River Festival: Since 2009, we have hosted an annual field trip for five economically challenged schools in NW Charlotte-Mecklenburg and East Gaston Counties to provide hands on learning opportunities in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) at the Duke Energy EnergyExplorium.

GTN works with over 30 organizations that collectively support school gardening and outdoor learning. The collective effectiveness of the team has shown engagement with over 185 area schools in the past 2 years.  In response to teachers surveys GTN published a Schoolyard Gardening and Tasting Guide as a step by step guide for school gardens and tastings. Also, UNC Charlotte Center for STEM Education is working on a Curriculum Connection Matrix to provide a centralized site to access school garden, tasting and outdoor learning lesson plans connected to North Carolina Essential Standards.

SCHOOL GARDEN CERTIFICATION

Fall 2015 Green Teacher Network will support 11 area schools as they transition from occasional school gardening to a curriculum integrated annual gardening strategy – GTN School Garden Certification.   Based on best practices from around the US and feedback from over 500 area teachers/informal educators, GTN Certification transitions school gardening to an intentional project-based learning initiative with a goal of engaging 10 to 15% of the teachers at each participating school to achieve school garden sustainability and increase effectiveness.

Little Tonto

Little Tonto is inspired by Mindy’s son Isaac, who has a genetic disorder called Fanconi Anemia. A small part of the disease is that the children always are very tiny. (You can read more about Isaac’s story here.) Mindy couldn’t find shoes to fit him, so she gathered some leather scraps & scissors & started testing out all sorts of little boots & shoes. She quickly fell in love with making little moccasins & trying new fun creative designs.  Check out these gorgeous little mocs from her summer market line:

Summer Market Vendor Spotlight: Some Things Wong

Posted by | events, vendor spotlight | No Comments

VTG CLT is popping up at the warehouse located at 2205 N Tryon, Charlotte, NC for the fourth annual Summer Market on July 24th (VIP Shop) and 25th (Market Day)! Come out and spend the day shopping with over 80 vintage & handmade vendors. Leading up to the market, we’ll be sharing vendor spotlight posts that give you a chance to meet some of our amazing vendors in advance of the market.

We are really excited to welcome Laci from Some Things Wong to her first Vintage Charlotte Summer Market.  We love her message of love and kindness and how beautifully it is expressed through her forever flowers.  Here is Laci with her story:

VTGCLT Summer Market, Something's Wong

Some Things Wong started a few years ago as a tiny little online shop that sold hair bows and earrings. It was fun for a while until I, Laci Wong, the owner and designer, felt something bigger stirring in my heart. I wanted to create something special that people would be able to not only buy for themselves but for other people as a token of kindness, and I wanted to be able to create enough revenue that I could give some of my proceeds away to good causes. After much thought and a bit of trial and error, in early 2015 forever flowers were born.

Something's Wong

I just love that in the same way that you might swing by the farmers market or trader joes and grab a bouquet, you can do the same in my shop, but customize them just the way you want, and bonus, they never die! The true heart of forever flowers is rooted in kindness and I have been overwhelmed at the way people have used my bouquets to spread just that to so many people. I have had the opportunity to send flowers to moms that have a babies in the NICU, friends who have lost loved ones, sisters waiting for surgery, from husbands to wives, sons to mothers, students to teachers. It has been inspirational to me to watch people genuinely and tangibly show loving kindness to others.

VTGCLT Summer Market, Something's Wong

10% of all the revenue from my shop goes to what I believe to be very worthy causes. This year I have been able to send money to World Relief, a refugee resettlement agency, and Servlife International, an organization that works in Nepal and has been able to bring a lot of relief to the people there after the most recent earthquake.I absolutely love doing this, and I truly love partnering with my customers to spread kindness literally all over the world. I can’t wait to see you all at the summer market, please stop by and say hi!

Summer Market Vendor Spotlight: Inherited

Posted by | events, vendor spotlight | No Comments

VTG CLT is popping up at the warehouse located at 2205 N Tryon, Charlotte, NC for the fourth annual Summer Market on July 24th (VIP Shop) and 25th (Market Day)! Come out and spend the day shopping with over 80 vintage & handmade vendors. Leading up to the market, we’ll be sharing vendor spotlight posts that give you a chance to meet some of our amazing vendors in advance of the market.

We are really excited to welcome Sabrina from Inherited to the Vintage Charlotte Summer Market.  Her Summer collection is swoon worthy and we can’t wait to see it in person!  Here is Sabrina breaking down her curatorial choices:

All vintage vendors offer a unique perspective on the pieces we sell. Some of us stick to a specific era; others focus on collecting a particular type of item. Each of us are drawn to these things for a reason, and the way we curate tem tells a story.

Inherited’s intention is to offer pieces that have a sense of romance and wearability — the kinds of clothes you’d inherit if you had a wild, world-traveling great-aunt or a burlesque-dancer-turned-botanist grandmother (if anyone does have this kind of relative, I’m filled with envy).
InheritedSpotlight
I’ve pulled together a Summer Capsule with pieces from the 1940s to the 1970s that capture a bit of what Inherited offers: neutral-toned separates that can be mixed and matched; fabrics like crochet lace, linen and embroidered silk that are nice to look at and touch; and bold prints that are eye-catching without being overwhelming.
InheritedSpotlight2
This capsule is made for summer vacation: all of the pieces can be thrown on without too much fuss. There’s an embroidered caftan you can wear over your bikini, a few dresses that can be worn to dinner or brunch, loose blouses that let you breathe on a hot day, and silky tap pants perfect for staying in. The prints and textures add some exotic appeal, so you can feel like you’ve traveled the world while sitting on your back porch.

The items in this capsule collection (and many others!) will be available at the Vintage Charlotte Summer Market. Looking forward to seeing you there!
