Posted by | Uncategorized | No Comments

Come out and spend the day shopping with over 60 of the region’s best vintage & handmade vendors. $2 general admission 11am-5pm. Want to have first pick at all the goodies? We offer $7 early bird entry at 10am.

Leading up to the market, we’ll be sharing vendor spotlight posts that give you a chance to meet some of our amazing vendors in advance of the market. We are excited to welcome back Up a Tree Cup a Tea Co. to the Vintage Charlotte Winter Market. Up a Tree Cup a Tea Co. specializes in making handbags using vintage and repurposed materials. Here is Johanna with an introduction to their brand, and a sneak peek at a few special items that will be available at the Winter Market:

As an artist and seamstress, I love giving materials that have been forgotten new life. Reusing vintage military tents, bank bag canvas, lace, and textiles to create one of a kind handbags. Each handbag saves a unique piece of Americana. All handbags are made using a team of heavy-duty, vintage sewing machines in my in-home studio on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

One of my favorite materials to work with is overshot. Overshot is a handwoven textile that reached it’s height in popularity in American from the 1750s to 1870s. Primarily woven to serve as bed coverlets, they became popular again the 20th century. Hunting down overshot at estate sales, auctions, and everywhere in between is one of my favorite things to do besides creating! Check out this Our State Magazine feature from earlier this fall that shares more about my story and process.

I’m bringing a variety of woven overshot bags at the Winter Market along with bags from the holiday collection that features Vietnam Era US Military duffle bags, tents blankets, and 1900s Turkish Kilim rugs. I’ll also be bringing a large collection of vintage felt pennants from all over the United States, Canada, and beyond.

Winter Market Vendor Spotlight: Posy

VTGCLT is popping up on November 18th at The Fillmore for the sixth annual Winter Market! Come out and spend the day shopping with over 60 of the region’s best vintage & handmade vendors.  $2 general admission 11am-5pm.  Want to have first pick at all the goodies? Leading up to the market, we’ll be sharing vendor spotlight posts that give you a chance to meet some of our amazing vendors in advance of the market. We are really excited to welcome Laura from Posy to her first Vintage Charlotte Winter Market. Posy specializes in quality, personal, and purposeful vintage goods. Here is Laura with some of her favorite customer stories and a sneak peak of what she is bringing to market:

At a recent market, I met a new customer, Joshua, who was interested in a 1970’s world globe. He ends up buying it and comes back for his purchase toward the end of the event, saying, “You know how you buy something, and you feel immediate remorse, wondering why you bought that thing? This isn’t one of those times! I love this globe and will keep it forever!” His joy at finding something meaningful was so uplifting! Much like the guy who bought dominoes for his uncle who’d just taught him to play. Or the customer who bought a drinking glass from the World Fair in NYC because he’d been there, the year the glass stated, and had fallen into the fountain, only to have his dad jump in and rescue him. And I love the instance a customer bought a yellow and red floral recipe box because it’s the same one his mom had, and he stayed in my booth texting all his siblings to confirm and share in the excitement.

Posy started off as a love for vintage and has morphed into a matchmaking service, pairing folks with an item that has true meaning to them!

Leading up to the market, we’ll be sharing vendor spotlight posts that give you a chance to meet some of our amazing vendors in advance of the market. We are really excited to welcome Matt of Carolina WDWRX (short for woodworks!) to his first Vintage Charlotte Market.  Carolina WDWRX specializes in custom, original woodworking, right here in Charlotte, NC.  Here is Matt from Carolina WDWRX with a little about childhood, inspiration and working alongside dad:

Growing up, I spent many a Saturday morning holding boards, steadying ladders, driving nails, and cleaning up sawdust for my dad’s various projects. While at the time, I probably would have preferred to watch cartoons or go back to bed, the skills I picked up along the way from my dad have proven to be invaluable.wdwrx-2Today, I gets the privilege of working alongside my dad in making the Carolina WDWRX items you’ll see at the market. Continuing to glean from my dad’s vast knowledge of woodworking (and occasionally even getting to teach him a thing or two!) not only allows us to deliver top notch quality items, but to pass on what is truly becoming a lost art.wdwrx-4 wdwrx-1Our inspiration is nature, preferring when possible to keep the original aesthetic of the wood. You’ll rarely see any heavily stained / dyed wood, and we keep the live/natural edges intact whenever possible. We blend that raw / natural aesthetic with modern/industrial elements to create pieces that we hope will exceed your expectations for form and function.screen-shot-2016-11-07-at-8-18-28-am screen-shot-2016-11-07-at-8-19-32-am

This lamp is made from a block of Cherry wood from a tree downed in Charlotte during Hurricane Hugo in 1989, which was cut by chainsaw by my father. The wood has been drying in storage in  for almost 27 years.  The block is roughly 2 inches thick, and left in it’s natural color, with only semi gloss polyurethane applied for protection. Featuring a vintage style “Edison” bulb, and a telecaster style on / off knob.

LLG_1269

Like most people, I rented a lot of houses and apartments in my 20s, and I moved a LOT.  For about ten years, I was constantly either packing or unpacking.  Every year when spring came, I already knew I’d be somewhere else in August, but I would get so overwhelmed with excitement at the changing season that I’d plant a really robust garden anyway.  Tomatoes, cucumber, herbs, and annual flowers seemed to be non-negotiable, but by the time the tomatoes were really coming in, I’d be living somewhere else, driving by to look at them and wishing someone would pick them.  I’d promise myself I wasn’t going to spend money planting a garden the following year, but every year I would.

So of course when we bought our house in 2012, I immediately put in a bed of perennials out behind my workshop.  I will never forget the first plant I saw emerge that following spring.  It was a sedum.  It was both fragile and strong at the same time, pale green and fat, and the sight of that delicate floret emerging from the soil after the horrendous winter absolutely electrified me.  A garden I wouldn’t have to re-plant, or abandon?!  I’ll never forget it.  That was the year I really started honing in on the botanical side of my brand and I’ve run with it ever since.

Summer Market Vendor Spotlight: Heart & Hand

Posted by | events, vendor spotlight | No Comments

VTG CLT is popping up on June 18th at 514 N. College Street for the fifth annual Summer Market! Come out and spend the day shopping with over 60 of the region’s best vintage & handmade vendors. Admission to the market is FREE from 11am-6pm! Get in an hour early at 10am for $5 to get first pick of all the goods.

Leading up to the market, we’ll be sharing vendor spotlight posts that give you a chance to meet some of our amazing vendors in advance of the market. We are really excited to welcome Taylor from Heart & Hand to his first Vintage Charlotte Market.  Taylor is bringing a selection of handmade spoons, cutting boards and live edge furniture.  Here’s Taylor telling us about his process and inspiration:

Screen Shot 2016-05-23 at 10.09.27 AM

“Why spoons?” is a question that spills out often. It is not difficult to see the beauty of the grain and appreciate the texture and interesting shapes that pop out from the variety of spoons. Each time I hold a piece of scrap wood, I pass it back in forth from my hands, staring at the unique grain and color, and wait for the shape of the spoon to appear.

Screen Shot 2016-05-23 at 10.09.45 AM

It is so easy to find my inspiration in the High Country of North Carolina. I have always had a passion and pull to be in the mountains. Now with my craft, I can bring small pieces of the mountain to others. My hope is that my craft brings a great appreciation of the mountains and to the trees.

Spoons and Scoops (1)

Although spoons are a large part of my craft, I also create cutting boards and live edge furniture. One of the things that attract me to this craft is the figured pieces. The parts that most find unappealing, I look forward to inspecting closer and finding the beauty. I hope others see how important sustainable crafts are and can find their own inspiration from something simple as a spoon.

Winter Market Vendor Spotlight: Sans Map Bags

Posted by | vendor spotlight | No Comments

VTG CLT is popping up on November 15th at The Fillmore for the fourth annual Winter Market!

We are really excited to welcome back Corey from Sans Map Bags to the Vintage Charlotte Winter Market. We are in love with her sophisticated, dreamy totes and bags. Here is Corey with her story and some sneak peeks of what she’s bringing to market:

sans map bags

The name Sans Map comes from the French word Sans, meaning ‘without’, and the English word Map. It all began several years ago while I was searching for vintage furniture after my husband and I moved back from living abroad in his hometown in the south of France. I happened to stumble across a beautiful vintage Italian-made Necchi sewing machine and even though I had no idea how to sew, and really no use for it at the time, felt an undeniable need to make it mine.  Twenty dollars, a professional tune-up, lots of googling and many broken needles later, my fingers were zooming down a road that would eventually lead to me creating Sans Map Bags.

sans map bags

I am intentional in my use of repurposed vintage garments, vintage fabrics, reclaimed materials and natural fibers and organic/recycled fabrics. Focused on small batch and limited run editions, I incorporate original stitching and seams, pockets, and natural leather imperfections into my work which lends to the unique quality of my bags. All of the creating magic happens in my home studio here in Charlotte, NC. After trading busy city life in Brooklyn, NY for sunnier days in the south, I continue to draw on my surroundings as inspiration. A traveller and a dreamer, I find endless beauty in the complexity of cities and the simplicity of nature. Sans Map is my philosophy: living life as it comes, taking the uncharted path and embracing the unexpected. Living life without a map…
