We are really excited to welcome Katie of Waxing Gibbous Pottery to her first Vintage Charlotte Summer Market.  Waxing Gibbous Pottery is a handmade ceramics shop, here is Katie with a little about her process:waxing gibbous pottery

I make ceramic objects for everyday use that capture a memory or a daydream of an exotic place. The time I have spent in the homes of Mexican immigrants and in the tiled rooms of Spain and Morocco has nudged my aesthetic toward bold folk imagery and geometric patterns. I am currently obsessed with Moroccan “zellige” tile mosaics and the palm fronds I saw all over Costa Rica.waxing gibbous potteryI convert images from my travel photographs into paper stencils and silkscreen patterns which are then applied using slip and underglaze to wheel thrown and handbuilt pots. The images transfer imperfectly to the surface of the pot, hinting of worn plaster walls and peeling paint. I work primarily in earthenware which uses less energy to fire and produces bright colors in clay and glazes. My forms are sturdy and comfortable, designed for the daily grind but reminiscent of a faraway place.waxing gibbous potterywaxing gibbous pottery

For each year I spend as a vintage seller, I realize I’ll never be able to streamline the color palette or the era of pieces I sell. In one moment, I’m drawn to muted, dusky hues and pieces from the 1910s to the 1930s. In another breath, I’ll be pulled in the direction of a brightly embroidered bohemian piece from the 1970s. For the 2017 Summer Market, I’m pulling together two capsules that manage to capture both sides of the spectrum.

Along with these capsule collections, I’ll have handbags, shoes, jewelry, and other accessories to add a vintage touch to your wardrobe. Counting down the days until the market!

batch craft chocolate
As lifelong artists, everything influences — and is an expression of — our making. Our current releases feature limited edition, dark chocolate bars as well as travel-inspired drawings and paintings. While art and chocolate might seem an unexpected pairing, both require heavy doses of curiosity, ingenuity, tenacity and craft.

We made our first small batch of bean-to-bar chocolate more than 3 years ago and are currently still one of only two bean-to-bar makers in South Carolina. We use only natural ingredients and the best direct trade cacao beans in the world. We often explore new regions of the world for inspiration as well as partner with local makers including Pure Intentions Coffee, Free Range Brewing, Bulls Bay Saltworks (Charleston, SC) and Dover Vineyards (Concord, NC.)

Each bar is signed and numbered as part of 3–4 limited editions per year. Once the batch sells out, it is gone for good. We are excited to release Batch 10 at the VTGCLT Summer Market!batch craft chocolatebatch craft chocolate

LLG_1269

Like most people, I rented a lot of houses and apartments in my 20s, and I moved a LOT.  For about ten years, I was constantly either packing or unpacking.  Every year when spring came, I already knew I’d be somewhere else in August, but I would get so overwhelmed with excitement at the changing season that I’d plant a really robust garden anyway.  Tomatoes, cucumber, herbs, and annual flowers seemed to be non-negotiable, but by the time the tomatoes were really coming in, I’d be living somewhere else, driving by to look at them and wishing someone would pick them.  I’d promise myself I wasn’t going to spend money planting a garden the following year, but every year I would.

So of course when we bought our house in 2012, I immediately put in a bed of perennials out behind my workshop.  I will never forget the first plant I saw emerge that following spring.  It was a sedum.  It was both fragile and strong at the same time, pale green and fat, and the sight of that delicate floret emerging from the soil after the horrendous winter absolutely electrified me.  A garden I wouldn’t have to re-plant, or abandon?!  I’ll never forget it.  That was the year I really started honing in on the botanical side of my brand and I’ve run with it ever since.

original brooksPrimarily self-taught as a bookbinder, I learned the fine craft of bookbinding while studying photography at the University of Oklahoma. But it was not until moving to Asheville in 2011 that my interest in bookmaking became serious. My bookmaking practice combines traditional bookbinding techniques and a modern approach to design. My handmade books incorporate vintage materials with clean designs. I am inspired by mid-century modern furniture and architecture and 1970’s floral motifs.
Process_ZodiacNotebook 2abb4f_2e1aefb0fdee40f1984f1773d3c10e01My books are hand-sewn, limited edition runs made from vintage paper and fabrics. I love the thrill of the hunt for a good bargain! Buying materials for my books is an excuse to go to thrifting. I can find interesting paper and cool vintage fabrics inexpensively. Using recycled materials not only make my books very unique (often one-of-a-kind) but also affordable for my customers. I feel good knowing that I am conserving resources and often saving materials bound for the landfill. For instance, I found a huge box of old, dated church programs that had no real use anymore. I was able to salvage part of the paper and create about 50 notebooks. I love the challenge of looking at a material and figuring out a creative re-use for it.Covers1 Brooks1

Summer Market Vendor Spotlight: EDIA Maps

VTGCLT is popping up on June 18th at 514 N. College Street for the fifth annual Summer Market! Come out and spend the day shopping with over 60 of the region’s best vintage & handmade vendors. Admission to the market is FREE from 11am-6pm! Get in an hour early at 10am for $5 to get first pick of all the goods.

Leading up to the market, we’ll be sharing vendor spotlight posts that give you a chance to meet some of our amazing vendors in advance of the market. We are really excited to welcome Amanda and Paul of EDIA Maps to their first Vintage Charlotte Market.  We just love the fun and informative maps that EDIA is bringing with them to market, here is Amanda with the story behind the adventures:9f921a88-4fce-4876-9691-888b0f1f85d5We’re a two-person, map-making team of North Carolinians comprised of myself (Amanda Fisher) and Paul Bright. We’re the makers of the Great NC BBQ Map, Great NC Beer Map, and Charlotte Adventure Map.

Our focus is on niche maps that turn the everyday into an adventure. Using an infographic approach, our style combines the convenience of a map with the depth of a guidebook. Our maps don’t just give you points along the road. Aside from symbols that tell you a lot about each stop, each map is surrounded with graphics and details on the history and culture of the topic. We think when you understand the many layers of what you’re experiencing, you’re able to derive more from it, and that difference in perspective is what turns the everyday into an adventure.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

For both of us, travel and discovery are our passions. We both love to road-trip around the US and explore the huge world we live in, but we maintain our spirit of adventure no matter where we are. It’s so easy to fall into a routine at home and do the same things with your spare time, but you can discover so much more when you approach your hometown and home state like a traveler would. That’s really the whole idea of EDIA. It’s an acronym that stands for “Every Day Is an Adventure,” something that became a motto for us years ago.

We live in such a beautiful and diverse state that we really believe every part of NC has something to offer. One thing we love about our maps is that they get you into parts of the state that you might not normally visit — those backroads, small towns, and forgotten neighborhoods — and visiting those places has given us a much deeper understanding and love for our state.
PA061006The idea of map-making really grew out of a shared love for travel, maps, travel guides and memorabilia. We both wanted to more fully integrate travel into our lifestyle and work. One day the map-making idea just clicked, and we realized what a perfect fit it was for both of us, Paul the cartographer, and me the creative force. And because of how much we use maps and travel guides, we see all that’s missing from that genre and have so many ideas for what can be done there.

We really do feel that adventure can be found anywhere. Discovery is the biggest thing for us when traveling. Even though you might have a destination in mind, there’s always unexpected surprises along the way if you give yourself time to pay attention and uncover them.PA191092

Summer Market Vendor Spotlight: Heart & Hand

Screen Shot 2016-05-23 at 10.09.27 AM

“Why spoons?” is a question that spills out often. It is not difficult to see the beauty of the grain and appreciate the texture and interesting shapes that pop out from the variety of spoons. Each time I hold a piece of scrap wood, I pass it back in forth from my hands, staring at the unique grain and color, and wait for the shape of the spoon to appear.

Screen Shot 2016-05-23 at 10.09.45 AM

It is so easy to find my inspiration in the High Country of North Carolina. I have always had a passion and pull to be in the mountains. Now with my craft, I can bring small pieces of the mountain to others. My hope is that my craft brings a great appreciation of the mountains and to the trees.

Spoons and Scoops (1)

Although spoons are a large part of my craft, I also create cutting boards and live edge furniture. One of the things that attract me to this craft is the figured pieces. The parts that most find unappealing, I look forward to inspecting closer and finding the beauty. I hope others see how important sustainable crafts are and can find their own inspiration from something simple as a spoon.
